A Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) is a plan to help you save money for retirement. Contributions, within limits, are tax deductible, and the income earned is tax sheltered, until eventually withdrawn from the plan. Funds must be withdrawn or rolled into a Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) by the end of the year you turn 71 years of age. In some situations, funds from your RRSP can be used towards the down payment for a qualifying residence without immediate taxation, or even used for your own post secondary education.

It provides long-term tax-sheltered savings, with qualifying contributions triggering as much as $90,000 in government grant and bonds over the lifetime of the account. To qualify as an RDSP beneficiary, you must be eligible for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) and be less than 60 years of age.

Retirement benefits earned with past employers can sometimes be paid out to departing or retiring employees. Depending on your age and the amount of benefit earned, the money may be required to be “locked” in for a period of time and not simply taken out as cash. Typically the funds become accessible at age 55, the normal early retirement age figure. These funds can be invested in a similar array of product choices as with an RRSP, the only distinguishing feature being the dollar amount and time frame at which funds can be eventually withdrawn.
