About the Bowen Branch

After years of struggling to attract financial institutions to Bowen Island, the former President of the Bowen Island Chamber of Commerce approached the CEO of First Credit Union after he saw the success of First Credit Union’s Texada Island Branch. Soon thereafter, a small start-up branch was established; First Credit Union on Bowen Island opened its doors to the public on June 9, 2007, coinciding with First Credit Union’s 68th anniversary.



With strong community support, the branch quickly outgrew it’s first location, and First Credit Union are now located on Dorman Road.

Bowen Island staff members take pride in the thousands of dollars given back to the Bowen Island community in the form of donations, sponsorships, scholarships, and profit-sharing dividends. Our staff are dedicated to serving Bowen Island residents and supporting the community. We support local events like Run for the Ferry, Round Bowen Yacht Race, Dog Days of Summer, and Light Up the Cove. We are also involved with community organizations like the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary.

About Cumberland Branch

At First Credit Union Cumberland Branch we are dedicated to serving our community. At a special membership meeting on August 22, 2012, the members of Cumberland & District Credit Union unanimously voted YES to a merger with First Credit Union. The merger was effective as of September 1, 2012.

Since its inception on February 11, 1951, Cumberland & District Credit Union has served as a local financial institution offering a full range of products and services.

In addition to our full service Cumberland branch, we also have a smaller satellite branch located in downtown Courtenay. Operating out of our 8th Street location of First Insurance, our staff members at the satellite branch offer a full range of member account services and lending.

Active in the Cumberland Community

We are proud to be actively involved in the local community, including support and partnerships with Cumberland Community Forest Society, Cumberland Community Schools Society, United Riders of Cumberland, Empire Days and more. In addition to supporting local organizations with donations and sponsorships, we offer an annual community investment fund, which gives one-time financial support to non-profit organizations that contribute to the social, health, economic or environmental well-being of our community. About Powell River Branch

First Credit Union opened its doors as Powell River Credit Union on June 9, 1939, making it the first registered credit union in British Columbia. As Powell River Credit Union opened more branches in other communities, it was renamed “First Credit Union”, as determined by its member-owners in 2007 .

With branches in Powell River, Texada Island, Bowen Island, and Cumberland, First Credit Union continues to grow and expand on the products and services it provides to it’s member-owners, with a focus on achieving an exceptional member experience.




The team at First Credit Union Powell River Branch enjoy taking part in various community events every year, including our Community Impact Day.  We also take pride in hosting our annual Movie Under the Stars event, and are happy to provide many donations, sponsorships, and scholarships to local organizations and students each year.

About Texada Branch

On September 18, 1956, Texada Credit Union began its journey that would eventually become a part of the First Credit Union family. For the first 35 years, Texada Credit Union was run by volunteers; however, keeping up with the regulations involved in running a credit union became too much for the volunteers to handle. As a result, Powell River Credit Union decided to open up their second branch on Texada Island.

On December 31st, 1991, the Powell River Credit Union took over the accounts and loans of Texada Credit Union, and on February 4, 1992, a branch with two staff members opened up in Van Anda. Within two years of opening, the branch went from being open two days a week to five days a week.

First Credit Union Texada Island Branch staff members are very involved in the Texada community and proudly participate in Sandcastle Days, the annual Easter Egg Hunt, and Run the Rock Marathon and Half-Marathon. They are proud to provide many donations and scholarships for various organizations and students in the Texada Island community.

Many credit unions were started when other financial institutions decided that it was not profitable enough to be in a small community. Credit unions are the only financial services provider in 900 communities, of which Texada is one.
